Overview
- The Black Molly is a black, captive-bred form of the common molly (Poecilia sphenops).
- Wild mollies range from Mexico south to Colombia and Venezuela.
- Grows to about 3.1 in (8 cm). [UNVERIFIED] Many black mollies in stores are hybrids with other molly species.
Feeding
- Omnivorous. Accepts most foods.
- A good share of the diet should be vegetable matter, such as vegetable flake or blanched spinach.
Habitat
- A tank of at least 36 × 12 × 12 in (90 × 30 × 30 cm).
- Planted tanks work well.
- Needs hard, alkaline water: 70–82°F (21–28°C), pH 7.0–8.5, GH 15–30.
Fish Care
- In soft or acidic water it weakens quickly, often showing shimmying, fungus or clamped fins.
- Salt is not needed. Calcium and magnesium hardness are what matter.
Compatibility
- Peaceful, but keep only with fish that like hard water.
- Good tankmates include other mollies, some rainbowfish, and hard-water barbs and tetras.
Aquarium Behavior
- Peaceful and active.
- Males chase females constantly, so keep several females per male.
Breeding
- Very easy in the right water. A livebearer.
- Gestation is about 8 weeks, and broods of up to 120 fry are not unusual.
- Adults eat fry, so provide dense plants for cover.
