Overview
- The Bronze Cory (Corydoras aeneus) is one of the best-known catfish in the hobby.
- Wild fish range across much of South America, from Trinidad to Argentina.
- Grows to about 3 in (7.5 cm) standard length.
- Albino and long-finned forms are bred. The origin of commercially bred “aeneus” is unclear.
Feeding
- A foraging omnivore. Accepts sinking dried foods plus small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm.
- Feed it directly. It cannot live on leftovers and is not a tank “cleaner.”
Habitat
- A tank with a base of 31 × 12 in (80 × 30 cm) for long-term care.
- Fine sand is ideal. Smooth, rounded gravel is OK if kept very clean.
- Provide some cover.
- Water: 70–81°F (21–27°C), pH 6.0–8.0, GH 2–15.
Fish Care
- Keep the substrate clean to protect its barbels. [UNVERIFIED]
Compatibility
- Peaceful. Good with most small community fish.
Aquarium Behavior
- Peaceful and sociable.
- Keep a group of at least 4–6.
Breeding
- Use 2 males per female if possible.
- When females are full of eggs, do a large (50–70%) water change with cooler water, and boost flow and oxygen. Repeat daily until they spawn.
- Eggs are usually laid on the glass. Offer fine-leaved plants or mops as well.
