Overview

  • The Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques), also called the jewel or callistus tetra, is a red tetra with a black shoulder spot.
  • Found through much of the Amazon and the Río Paraguay.
  • Grows to about 1.6 in (4 cm) standard length.

Feeding

  • Likely omnivorous. Accepts dried foods, but does best with live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and similar.

Habitat

  • A tank with a base of 31 × 12 in (80 × 30 cm).
  • Shows the best color with live plants and a dark substrate.
  • Water: 68–82°F (20–28°C), pH 5.0–7.5, GH 1–15.

Fish Care

  • Hardy and easy to keep.

Compatibility

  • Known for fin nipping. Avoid slow or long-finned fish such as bettas and angelfish.
  • Works best with fast, robust tankmates.

Aquarium Behavior

  • Nipping is worst in small groups or cramped tanks. Keep a good-sized group. [UNVERIFIED] At least 8.

Breeding

  • An egg scatterer with no parental care.
  • A separate dim tank with fine-leaved plants or mesh gives more fry.
